Overrun / Pop / Crackle

What is POP, Bang, Flames ?

Pop, bang, and flames are features in ECU maps for petrol car exhausts, creating popping, crackling, and even flame effects. While not new to the world of engine modifications, they are popular at legally organized car clubs and monthly owner club meets.

These maps, ranging from high-performance cars to everyday vehicles, are widespread in the car scene but may not appeal to everyone. They are enjoyed by enthusiasts of all ages.

Through clever tuning, we can provide this service, which depends on the vehicle and modifications.

How does it work and is it safe ?

Many manufacturers now engineer their ECUs to naturally produce pops and crackles by including sports exhausts in their vehicle designs. They do this due to the feature’s popularity.

To safely generate pops and burbles without harming pistons, we slightly retard the ignition timing. This induces a slight misfire, allowing unburnt fuel to flow into the exhaust rather than causing damage to the piston chamber. The heat from the exhaust or catalytic converter then ignites the fuel, creating the pops and crackles you enjoy hearing.

The Law

According to Regulations 61(7) and 61A(3) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations and Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is illegal to use a vehicle on the road if modifications have been made that cause it to no longer meet the air pollutant emissions standards it was designed for.

Penalties for non-compliance can include fines of up to £1,000 for a car and £2,500 for a van, lorry, or bus.
